What is Chiropractic?
The alignment of the vertebral column affects the function of the spinal nerves, and the body’s health in general. Chiropractic Treatment aims to restore the optimal balance of the neuromuscular system by correcting biomechanical misalignment, thereby allowing the recuperative ability of the body to operate optimally.
Common problems treated by Chiropractic Doctors include LOW BACK PAIN, NECK PAIN, SCIATICA, HEADACHE, SHOULDER PAIN, NUMBNESS OR TINGLING TO THE EXTREMITIES, and SPORTS RELATED INJURIES.
Low Back Pain
Low back pain (LBP) covers a number of problems that cause pain in the lower back and pelvis. It involves the joints as well as ligaments and muscle that are part of the structure and mechanism of the region. Studies show that 60% to 70% of the populations have one or more episodes in their lifetime.
Causes of low back pain range from sprain and strain as well as prolonged awkward positions and movements related to our everyday life style, occupations and after-effects of trauma, occupational injuries or sports injuries, even from many years ago. Degenerative changes of the spine are usually associated with faulty mechanics as a result of old injuries.
Chiropractic care is aimed at restoring the entire spine, not just the low back, to a better working condition, thus allowing normal function and restoration of both the position and motion of the joints. Attention is also paid to the muscles and ligaments that are a vital part of the spinal balance and mobility. The chiropractor will advise the patient on improving lifestyle and nutrition to prevent further problems.
Frozen shoulder is an inflammatory condition, usually, but not always, due to an injury or strain, in which the soft tissue associated with the shoulder joint, becomes stiff and painful. The symptoms sometimes appear gradually and progress from a feeling of heaviness or pressure to actual pain. There is limitation of movement of the affected shoulder.
Chiropractic care aims to restore the normal function of the spine with special attention to neck and upper rib cage. Gentle passive motion is applied to the shoulder and exercises are suggested to gradually restore normal motion in the shoulder.
Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine, more prevalent in girls, that develops as a child grows. Although parents often become alarmed when they see the curvature, it is only in extreme cases that the scoliosis can be a health hazard. In most cases the cause for the scoliosis is unknown (idiopathic), but in some cases trauma or one leg being longer than the other can be blamed.
Chiropractic care is aimed at maintaining full and normal spine mobility as the child grows. Exercises are suggested to help to strengthen the muscles that support the spine. It is important to reassure both the child and the parents that scoliosis is not a disease and is rarely a cause for alarm.
Pregnancy chiropractic is all about balancing the spine and nervous system of the expectant mother in order for her to have a less stressful and less painful pregnancy and shorter delivery. 50 - 70% of women will have back pain during pregnancy.
"I believe the body and mind are very interconnected and therefore it is crucial to balance them both out." Dr. Kamilla Holst
Headache is a painful condition affecting various parts of the head and can be caused by a number of things. Tension and migraine headaches account for up to 90% of cases. Although not life threatening, these headaches can make life very unpleasant for the sufferer.
By far the majority of headaches are not really in the head, but are caused by muscle contraction and/or vascular problems.
Cervicogenic headaches are caused by neuromusculo-skeletal dysfunctions in the upper part of the neck.
Other causes of headache include such things as allergies, sinus infections, hormonal imbalance, infections, brain tumors, and hematomas etc due to head injuries.
Chiropractic care is focused on the cause of the headache. Where there is tension and restriction of movement in the vertebral segments of the cervical spine (neck) the chiropractor will trace the cause, which may be coming from other areas of the spine, and restore the normal function. Tension and migraine headaches often have external causes, such as emotional issues as well as tension, loud noises or flashing lights. If there is also tension from a musculo-skeletal cause in the spine this will aggravate the overall problem. Chiropractic adjustment can reduce at least the structural cause of the tension.
Cervicogenic headaches are more directly related to the structural integrity of the spine and therefore respond very well to the chiropractic adjustment.
Sciatica is a source of often extreme pain or numbness down the leg. The sciatic nerve, from which the name of the condition originates from, runs from the base of the spinal cord and exits between the lowest spinal vertebrae.
The cause of the pain can be from the bones touching the nerve or a bulge in the disc. It can also be caused by muscle spasm in the buttocks.
Chiropractic care can, in many cases, reduce the pressure from the discs, joints and muscles to bring about relief. Rarely the disc condition is severe enough to warrant surgery. Usually sciatica is the result of a long running spinal problem that should have been seen to a long time ago.
Sport injuries are basically injuries that occur to athletes. The most prevalent injuries are sprains and strains due to the stresses that they put themselves under. The amateur, and weekend sportsman is also at risk of injury, many times because of poor physical fitness and the sporadic nature of their sports regimen.
Chiropractic care is the same as for any of the other forms of injury, but with more emphasis on advice about gaining and maintaining the fitness that is required for the sport involved.
Neck pain is a common problem for the chiropractor and in most cases responds well to the chiropractic adjustment. Most neck pain is caused by a musculoskeletal problem of the cervical spine.
The most common cause of a painful neck is sprain / strain and spasm of the neck muscles. Car and sports accidents are the obvious causes of many neck injuries, but prolonged working positions can also take their toll on the neck. The Whiplash injury is often seen in car accidents and is caused by the sudden deceleration and jerking back of the head. The whiplash injury is often overlooked at the time, but can become a more serious problem later on. It is always wise to see a chiropractor after a car or sports accident or injury. Poor posture, and incorrect sleeping positions can also be culprits.
Chiropractic care is aimed at restoring the entire spine, not just the neck, to a better working condition, thus allowing normal function and restoration of both the position and motion of the joints. Attention is also paid to the muscles and ligaments that are a vital part of the spinal balance and mobility. The chiropractor will advise the patient on improving lifestyle and nutrition to prevent further problems.
Paresthesia means an abnormal tingling or numbness in the extremities. The tingling sensation indicates some degree of nerve irritation, usually at the part of the nerve that passes through the gap between the bones of the spine that go to that extremity. Numbness would indicate a more severe form of nerve damage. There are other causes of paresthesia, which could appear in any part of the body; these include metabolic and vascular problems.
Chiropractic care is effective where the spine and nerves are involved. Paresthesia should always be taken seriously and your chiropractor will determine whether it is a chiropractic case or not. If not, he/she will refer to another health professional.
Bone spurs are irregular outcroppings of bone, usually as a result of abnormal weight-bearing or stress due to improper joint function and the misalignment of adjacent bony structures. Bone spurs rarely grow into sensitive areas but they can sometimes, through a shift in the positioning of the joints, touch or encroach upon nerves within the vertebral complex.
Chiropractic care is aimed at restoring the entire spine, not just the area of the bone spur, to a better working condition, thus allowing normal function and restoration of both the position and motion of the joints. Attention is also paid to the muscles and ligaments that are a vital part of the spinal balance and mobility. The chiropractor will advise the patient on improving lifestyle and nutrition to prevent further problems.
